Cambodia - The Nutrition Program
An End to hunger
Most Cambodians have known profound hunger at some time during
the past decades of war and severe poverty. However, the
effects of malnutrition are most heartbreaking and dangerous
in small children. The legacy of malnutrition for
children is stunted growth, mental disability and sometimes
death.
The Servants Community Nutrition program assists children
under five years who are malnourished. Since the program
started in 1994 we have treated hundreds of children, with
three quarters achieving their target weight. Follow up
has shown the children to be doing well.
Education as well as food
In addition to a weekly clinic, parents are educated on food
groups and cheap sources of vital nourishment, as well as
basic hygiene and health care. Each child in the program
is also visited at home during the week to reinforce the
teaching.
Keviet's story
Barely a year old and one of five children, Keviet was brought
to us on death's door, suffering from severe malnutrition.
His parents were desperately poor. Homeless, they
sheltered at the local hospital. We immediately helped
with medicine and milk powder. Both Keviet and his
mother were found to be suffering from TB and required daily
treatment for six months.
With a small loan from Servants for a cyclo, the father worked
hard to earn money to pay rent on a small home. The
family made slow but steady progress with regular visits from
Servants staff. They are now doing well and standing on
their own two feet.
