Indonesia
The tsunami hit the children of Banda Aceh particularly hard.
Of those who survived, many thousands lost the roof over their
head and everything they owned. Tragically, many also lost
their parents. In time, homes can be rebuilt and property
restored, but the warmth of a mother’s embrace and the gentle
guidance of a loving father is irreplaceable. Who will help
these children learn to live with their loss and rebuild their
lives in the post-tsunami city of Banda Aceh?
Servants to Asia's Urban Poor
has been invited by the Indonesian education authorities to
partner with local schools in helping Aceh’s children rebuild
their lives.
Project SHARE
(Sports, Health And REcreation) is
a dynamic rehabilitation program which is initially being run
in four schools in Banda Aceh. The program will incorporate
health messages, psychosocial wellbeing activities, sports and
recreation. Our vision is to see these children become all
that God created them to be.
We are looking for people with a big heart for kids, a
pioneering spirit and a passion to live incarnationally
amongst the urban poor. Since this is a new ministry, you will
need to be a self-starter and strongly committed to raising up
local leadership. Useful skills include: teachers, health
professionals, youth and children’s workers.
The waves of the tsunami swept away something more important
than just Aceh’s fishing boats and homes. The tsunami took
away people’s ability to earn a living, the simple dignity of
being able to put food on the table every night and provide
for their families.
A Servants team member reported, "The friendliness and warmth
of these people is amazing. Everywhere we go, even in the
midst of the pain, people are smiling, calling us
to sit and talk, and thanking us for
coming to help. Over and over they
just keep saying we want
to work, we
want to go
back to work."
Servants to Asia's Urban Poor
has been invited to partner with local Christians in assisting
the entrepreneurial poor who lost their small businesses in
the Tsunami, with a particular emphasis on assisting women and
young people.
The Dignity Project
is a micro-enterprise program designed to restore livelihoods
through small business, savings and loans, reaching 200
families in the first year.
The program will also incorporate a training component for
young people from urban poor communities in English and
computer skills to enhance their employment prospects. We are
looking for people passionate about serving the poor through
small business and education, and willing to live
incarnationally amongst the urban poor.
You
will need to be a self-starter since this is a new ministry,
and strongly committed to raising up local leadership. Useful
skills include: small business experience, accounting,
finance, English and computer teaching.
