Message from Servants Cambodia Co-Team Leader, Steve Tripp:

"Many of you may have read about the tragic flooding in Cambodia at present. So far 247 people have been confirmed dead throughout the country with many more missing. 270,000 families have had their houses flooded and 16% of the nations rice paddies have been destroyed."

floodAs usual it is the poorest of the people who are most vulnerable as their fragile shacks are often built on low-lying land and riverbanks.

This flooding has also impacted some of the poor slum communities in Phnom Penh that Servants workers live and work in, affecting the lives of our neighbours and friends.

Servants Cambodia will be working together with Mercy Teams International to provide flood relief to many of the families from our communities that are affected by the flooding."

Initially this money will be used to provide food (rice and fish) for affected families. During floods food prices increase due to transport difficulties and generally a poor family's response to increased food prices is to buy less food.

Many other costs increase also; in particular medical costs increase as the black flood water causes skin problems and lowered immunity from lack of food combined with more pollution and dirty water everywhere means there are many other illnesses also. Providing food is an important intervention to keep poor families from becoming destitute in times of crisis.
