Evicted Jakarta Slum burns down

Many of you have been following the story of our neighbourhood over the last month as we have found out about the looming eviction. As many in the neighbourhood were clinging to the hope it would all turn out to be nothing, others decided to move on voluntarily (and their houses were demolished the next day to make sure no one else moved in) Sadly, in the midst of this, an even greater tragedy has now befallen our community. Last night a great fire spread rapidly through the community hastened by the trash dump nearby and by the fact the roads are not able to take a fire truck so it took the firefighters a while to get to it.

All said and done, there were, thankfully, no lives lost. However, with the speed of the fire, lots of folks got out with only what they were wearing. Many folks are now back on their land (they have no place else to go) which is just a pile of rubble. Our team here in Jakarta plans to help folks as they start to try and rebuild their lives from nothing. We want to give folks a small stove with a few pots and some buckets in which they would be able to wash dishes and laundry, as well as a tarp since rainy season is nearly upon us and these folks no longer have a roof over their heads.

If you would like to donate to this, we would welcome you to join us. [Please see the information below]

Above all, please being praying for our neighbours and friends who, having so little to begin with, now have nothing. Pray that God will be their comfort in their great loss. Pray that people will look after one another, that calm heads prevail. Pray that no one will take advantage of these folks at their weakest. And pray for us as we seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in a wounded place.

“But you are a tower of refuge to the poor, O Lord,

a tower of refuge to the needy in distress.

You are a refuge from the storm and a shelter from the heat “

- Isaiah 25:4
