Family Planning - Empowering mothers

Cambodians traditionally have large families, with as many as ten or twelve children. Increasingly however, many are eager to use simple family planning techniques to limit family size.

As part of our ongoing battle against poverty and malnutrition, we aim to ensure that every woman has the information and services to plan the timing, number and spacing of her pregnancies. Once women have knowledge and experience, they are empowered to use government or other healthcare services.

Community family planning programs

TASK currently runs family planning clinics in six locations. One TASK worker, a midwife, goes regularly to each place and works closely with the local birth attendant to give education and provide contraception to the many women who are too poor to access other services.

Antenatal Care - Prevention is easier than cure

An essential part of preventing difficulties and deaths during childbirth is identifying potential problems in advance. Medical care is not free in Cambodia so most women do not see a medical practitioner before the birth of their child. When complications threaten the life of the child, care is often too little, too late.

TASK assists poor women to access these ante-natal services at a minimal cost. Servants also trains women in the community to recognise danger signs in pregnancy, encouraging them to share their knowledge with others.

Through sharing their knowledge of reproductive health with others in the community, the service has a snowball effect. We are seeing increased rates of breast feeding, healthier births and healthier mothers.

Village Midwives

Seeking to bring long-lasting change from within Khmer society, we work closely with Cambodia's traditional birth attendants, teaching them how to prevent complications in delivery and ensure that problems in pregnancy are detected early and treated appropriately.

We aim to ensure that all traditional birth attendants have the knowledge and skills to provide excellent antenatal and postnatal care, and if necessary to perform a clean and safe delivery in the home.

We hold teaching and debriefing sessions for a close-knit group of local birth attendants. These monthly sessions are reinforced with regular home visits by our staff.
