Servants has established a new team in Southall, London

Servants Southall is the first UK expression of the Servants principles and lifestyle commitments that have been practised by our teams in slums across Asia for the past 25 years. A team of five relocated to Southall in October 2008.  We currently live in two houses near each other as a Christian Community, participating in daily rhythms of prayer, radical hospitality and service. We work for justice, proclaim God’s grace, and lift all things to Him in prayer. We share a longing to see God’s Kingdom come amongst the lost, lonely and marginalised in Southall. Our vision is: to live simply, prophetically, and against the grain of our individualistic society.

Southall is a suburb on the west edge of London, about 10 miles from the city centre. In a report published last year, Southall was described as the least English place in England, with just 17.82% of residents being of English ethnic origin. As you exit the train station you will see the ’Welcome to Southall’ sign in Punjabi as well as English. A nearby pub is in the only one in the UK to accept rupees! Consequently, Southall is known to many as ‘Little India’. As one resident from Southall writes:

‘Waking up everyday watching cars going past, horns beeping, Indian women walking in their salwar kameezes, the golden domes of the gurdwara, the smell of jalebis mmmm…, the sound of the same song at every stall. Hang on this isn’t India it’s our very own Southall, a home away from home! … No town can be the same as SOUTHALL, I pretty much can tell you that. World of culture, shops, restaurants, beauty, and personality … wonderful aromas and exotic spices. There are many places of worships in Southall, Havelock Gurdwara, the Southall Church, the Mosque and the new Mandhir. They are opened to everyone and easy to find! If you need anything you are probably sure to find it in Southall!’
